About Jr Iron Chef VT

Jr Iron Chef VT is a statewide competition for middle and high school students that highlights local agriculture, promotes the culinary arts, and raises awareness about the complexity of our school food systems.

Jr Iron Chef VT empowers students to take the lead on solving complex problems of underfunded school meal programs and the lack of access to fresh fruits and vegetables for many children in the state.  The student chefs have a unique opportunity to find creative solutions in partnership with local chefs and farmers, school food service professionals, and teachers.

School food change takes many players—students, food service, parents, and the community. Jr Iron Chef VT involves all of these players to create a vibrant, fun, and wildly popular event!

"We know that it is not about winning but about creating a love of cooking and knowing your food. I have seen students work as true team members, helping one another and giving really constructive feedback to each other. These are strengths that we try to instill in them in the classroom or in sports but often do not have full success with. For our children, there is no better experience."
         -Keenan Haley, teacher, Sharon Elementary

All proceeds from Jr Iron Chef VT directly support two leaders in the Farm to School movement: Vermont FEED and the Burlington School Food Project.
